Reindeer Crossing

It was a very cold, sub-zero morning (-20 degrees Celsius) as I headed north again. This time, to a special place called Reindeer Station. We drove on the frozen Mackenzie River to a spot about 55 miles from the Arctic Ocean. The goal was to be in position before the reindeer herd would be driven back across the frozen river towards its breeding grounds. This is important for the survival of the herd and to time it correctly before the river begins to thaw.

Navigating across the frozen Mackenzie River was a surreal experience, the ice beneath our vehicles creaking and groaning in protest against the weight pressing down upon it.  Luckily we arrived in time. Many people were gathered there to witness this spectacle, but it was quiet as we waited. As we positioned ourselves, anticipation hung thick in the air. Time was of the essence, for the annual migration of the reindeer herd was an orchestrated dance between nature and necessity.

As the reindeer herd emerged on the horizon, a wave of awe swept over us, their hooves pounding against the icy surface and fighting through the thick snow. It was quite the sight to behold such a large herd of over three thousand. There was confusion and resistance for quite a while. The herd seemed confused, unsure of the purpose of the drive that morning. After a bit of discontent, a leader emerged from the crowd and the whole herd began to follow. It would not be long before they would move on. As the last of the reindeer disappeared into the distance, leaving behind only the massive imprint of their passage upon the pristine snow, we knew that we had borne witness to something truly special.
